My iPod classic will not charge, the screen is stuck on charging, does it need a new battery?

MY iPod classic was completely discharged of power for a long time. When I plugged it in, it first said very low battery, and then changed to the charging screen. It has been charging for 2 days and seems unable to recharge. Is it possible to replace the battery?
