What specific circumstances provoke a crash?

To start, delete your preferences as you should after every crash: not only corrupt preferences are one of the most common cause for crashes, but crashes tend to corrupt preferences in turn.

To delete preferences hold down command and option keys while starting FCP X and confirm.

I have the same issue with my iMac. I deleted the preferences but it did not eliminate the crashes.

Same set up for me compressor doesn crash it just doesn't process the project. After about 5 minutes with no process shown on the progress bar in the Acitve Window. It then clears and shows up in the Complete window as Failed in red. In the Status column a line displays as follows. Failed: 3x Timed out, server application never registered to receive message

Some third party plugins have caused issues.

Do you have any loaded?

by third party plug in for example do you mean effects for FCPx or Motion 5? if so yes however there was not additional change to computer prior to this occurrence. The effects I have are from FXFactory and MotionFx
