    Hi Adamski100,

Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.

If Mail is quitting unexpectedly, there are several steps that may help.

First, try this tip from If Mail unexpectedly quits when viewing certain messages

Mail may quit when you view an email message that is malformed or damaged, and it may continue to quit as long as the message remains selected. Resolve the issue by following these steps to delete the message:

    1. Open Mail and immediately hold the Shift key until Mail opens. This causes Mail to open without any message or mailbox selected.
    2. Hide the message viewer portion of the window by carefully dragging the thin separator bar between it and your list of messages. Keep dragging until Mail shows only the list of messages, not the message viewer. In this view, you can see messages only by double-clicking to open the message.
    3. Click the affected message once to select it without opening it. Then press Delete or choose Message > Move to > Trash.

After this, if the same thing keeps happening it may take some investigation to find the cause. The advice in Isolating issues in Mac OS X is a good starting point for a situation like this.

    Sincerely.

    Try this....

go to Internet accounts in system preferences...

uncheck mail in iCloud and disable ALL non Apple email accounts

    Close System Preferences

Open Mail..  Should be OK now.. But no mail will load...

Go back to System Preferences and get rid of any internet accounts you no longer use...

recheck iCloud mail and enable other non Apple accounts

    close system preferences

open Mail... You will get a flood of emails from mail servers.

Mail should work now.... This fix worked for me

I am sure Apple will release a parch shortly for this problem

that worked for a minute but Mail is hanging again. It doesn't crash and quit, it just sits there with the rainbow spinning pizza of death. Then I have to force quit.

Ok, similar problems. Followed most of the other advice, i.e. switch off wi fi, delete the mail accounts and then re load the mail accounts one by one.

My problem cam back every time I tried to add my Yahoo account again.

I then realised that during the El Capitan upgrade, iCloud is automatically added as a mail account, and I had logged into i. Unfortunately, my windows ID is my Yahoo address, and so whenever I added a new Yahoo account, it shut down both iCloud and Yahoo, (presumably because it automatically switched to IMAP) whereas previously my Yahoo account was through POP.

Once I deleted iCloud as a mail account, I was able to install my Yahoo account and retrieve all my mail. Currently working ok, fingers crossed!

It was driving me nuts, why cannot Apple get this basic need sorted before mass release as all of us need reliable mail programme . Very disappointing Apple

Mail changed the way your mail is stored in El Capitan. The upgrade process can fail for many users.

See these two articles to give you some detailed background on the changes and options to fix. If you need further assistance, we'll need details like type of accounts POP, IMAP, Exchange. Do you have messages stored locally under "On My Mac"? Do you have Time Machine backup?
