Well I have read and read your posts. Saw the hidden files bit and found the option to disable the hiding of files. Then went into the file path and hey presto there is a new file there which is just a load of digits like your back ups. There is only the one so it looks like it has been over writing itself? If that's the case then hey ho I might have my treasured photos but not my music (wife and daughter have just looked over to me with a smile) it's saying it will take 40 mins to download onto my external hard drive so I think it's looking promising?? From there onto the laptop which has Windows 7 on it (and iTunes) and then a restore onto the iPad?
Well thats hats the theory I will report back.
cheers. Col.

Oct 7, 2015 12:44 AM in response to ColinK61by ColinK61,Hello chaps,
Thanks for your help. The file transferred from the old Vista 32 bit computer onto my external hard drive, then transferred from that onto the Windows 7 laptop all hood.
At that point it was late and I gave up. I did not know where to put the back up file. I ended up dropping it into the apple computer iTunes folder but not sure how that now gets onto the iPad? I did connect the iPad and it talks to iTunes on the laptop fine. Just stuck on the transfer bit.
thanks for the help guys I did not think I would get this far. Cheers

Oct 7, 2015 1:36 AM in response to ColinK61by King_Penguin,If it's the backup folder that you copied then on Windows 7 it goes into :
\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
iTunes should automatically pick that up, it should show in the Devices tab in Edit > Preferences (similar to elcpu's screenshot a few posts ago). To
You've also copied your iTunes library over to that computer (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204318) ? Your music, films, apps etc are not included in the actual backup, a restore will look for them in the iTunes library - if the music, apps etc aren't in the iTunes then the restore won't be able to copy them back
To restore to a backup : https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204184

Oct 7, 2015 4:51 AM in response to ColinK61by elcpu,Colin, bear with me please, I know you are trying your best but you need to read all of our messages slowly and carefully. I do not mean to be arrogant and if I appear that way, I apologize, my only desire is to help you. King told you correctly above about the location of the file (you can only get there by unhiding hidden files or going by way of %appdata%). However I had given you the same information on my screenshots before, the path to the proper location was shown there, don't know why you placed it on the iTunes folder.
Regarding your music, films, apps, etc. King mentioned that they would not be included in the actual backup but there is something you can do to have at least the apps stored and maintained current in your iTunes library and maybe all other. Please see the screenshot below (this one is from my Mac but Windows will be the same). Go to iTunes, Preferences, Store and put a check mark next to Apps (and any other you wish). From that point forward iTunes will keep a current copy of your Apps in the computer ready to use during a restore.
Cheers and good luck...

Oct 7, 2015 12:06 PM in response to ColinK61by ChrisJ4203,You seemed to have ignored my post with the recommendation to download the updated iTunes for Windows Vista. This is the link for the iTunes 12.1.3 for 32-bit Vista. No need to be trying to move backup files and everything else.
iTunes 12.1.3 for Windows (32 bit).
Good luck with downloading that, installing it, and moving on with your device.
