Q: OS X El Capitan Apple ID authentication problem

There is a bug in every app based on the authentication of an Apple ID on OS X 10.11, such as App Store, iTunes or iCloud:
Every time I do the login appears an error message in red that says: "This action could not be completed. Try again."
It isn't a problem to my ID, because on any browser I can log.
I do not know what to do, I can not update it will download the app, I can not access iCloud and even synchronize iTunes, I am blocked.

I hope someone has a solution

Thanks for the attention

I am experiencing the same problem on two computers. I see no errors in the system log when the Apple ID authentication fails.

I also have this happen. Cannot use Messages, iTunes, iBooks, nor any other program related to the Apple ID. I am able to log into my AppleID on other devices and browsers, and can even use the developer profile in Xcode with the same Apple ID, though anytime I try to log into my AppleID under iCloud in System Preferences I get the same "Verification Failed This action could not be completed. Try again." message.

Trying to log into Messages tells me instead "An error occurred during authentication."

This is after a fresh OS installation after erasing my drive completely. I did use Migration Assistant from a Time Machine to bring back my account, settings, and programs though ( where at the Assistant I also could not login with my AppleID ). Disk Utility of course thinks everything is fine as well.

Same problem for me too, I bought this Macbook Pro 15" in early September, and upgraded to EI Capitan on 3 October.

I have spoken to Apple Telephone Support a few times, and it appears everything is fine with my macbook. Last night they advised me to reinstall EI Capitan. I did, but the problem and message remain.

I saw one post in another thread that a new clean install is needed. To wipe your drive and install everything piece by piece is too much pain.

Any other ideas? Thanks a lot.

same here. I installed a new SSD and cloned my old install to it but left my itunes, photos, etc folders on the HDD. When I sat down to fix Photos and itunes to work with the new paths, Photos was fine, but it will not let me log in to icloud. icloud is fine on my ipad and I can log in using a browser, but log in fails when I try to set up icloud on my mac, so no app store for me.

Frustrated and out of ideas so I'll watch this thread and hope for a fix.

I was able to resolve this!

What I ended up doing is re-installing the OS again, on top of my current OS after the fresh installation from a reformat and the migration step after that. Strangely I did not have the errors anymore! Hopefully this also helps others.

...However unrelated, I am back to my original issue that had me reformat and reinstall my OS in the first place... "An unexpected error occurred while signing in." with the App Store and iBooks....

I had the same problem - after a clean install and restoring from Time Machine I could not log in to iCloud and related services on this computer. I tried reinstalling, but in my case it did not help, unfortunately. So I tried another way: I created another administrator account. Using this new account I logged into iCloud with no problem. Then I was return to my original account, and this time I was able to log into iCloud correctly.

    EVERYTHING is working now!

My Problem: After upgrading to El Captain, I just couldn't login to iCloud - no AppStore, iMessage, Notes etc. I kept getting "invalid password" messages on triple checked passwords, some other times it would say "An error occurred during authentication. Try Again." basically random behaviour in general. Also it's not like I couldn't log in to my iCloud account, in fact couldn't log in to any iCloud account. I have a 13inch Macbook Pro, though I'm sure now that this doesn't really have anything to do with my hardware model in particular.

I spent a couple of hours around these forums and consolidated all solutions that seemed to have worked at least once for at least one person. Here is every thing I tried:

    0. Changed date/time preferences to update automatically: Nothing changed.

    1. Removing files in iCloud/Accounts folder and rebooting : There weren't any, so removed the folder and rebooted. Nothing changed.

    2. Cleared the NVRAM (press Cmd+Alt+P+R) wait for two dong sounds during reboot: Nothing changed.

    3. Deleted all login keychain entries corresponding to my appleId: Nothing changed

    4. Re-installed OSX from OSX recovery : Nothing changed. (ref:  How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support)

I was just getting ready for a (gasp) CleanInstall. When I decided to try this:

    5. Create a new Admin Account, set it to use a separate password, after that account was created I tried to login to my iCloud Account from there. Nothing changed, got the same error I was getting from my user account.

    6. Create a new Admin Account, set it to use an iCloud Password, (note: it said that I couldn't use my original apple Id as it was already associated with an account on my Mac, so created one on icloud.com)  did the necessary steps for setting up that account, then switched back to my user, and tried to sign in to cloud again, and it worked! It Actually worked!

iMessage, App Store, XCode all signed in and running smoothly!

To solve this issue, you must have a new clean install of OS X EI Captain. I spent half a day to wipe the drive and install a clean OS X, then copy all my data over again. Please remember to back up your data first.
