Q: need clone of g5

I need to save the data off of my G5.  I don't have time to sort through it file by file.  I tried copying the entire hard drive on the g5 to a mounted Seagate external drive on my networked macbook pro.  I go an error message something about can't copy some items that are backup items.  I would like it to be easy to find what I need later.  Do I connect the seagate drive directly to the g5 or mount it on the macbook pro?  I read something about a bootable dmg.  So later I could connect the seagate drive to my macbook pro and would like to look through the files that way but don't understand if I need it to be bootable.  In that case I would be looking at the g5 on my macbook pro don't know if that is necessary.  All I need is to be able to read the files on the seagate drive on the macbook pro.

thanks,

g5 1.8 ghz, Mac OS X (10.5.6), 1 gb ram

As I recall, a Bootable backup won't work from G5 to MBP unless...

    A. You installed for any Mac with the Retail version of the Install Disc.

    B. Your MBP is old enough AND originally came with 10.5

There are ways to Clone the Drive, like older copies of Carbon Copy Cloner, Super Duper, or Tri-Backup, or you can pull the drive & use one of these connected to the MBP to read the drive...

Just connect external drive to your G5 and open Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! then select source drive is internal OS boot drive and destination drive is external one.

Cloning won't make a bootable backup for the MBP, but you would be able to Migrate all the info to your MBP, or possibly install 10.6 to the clone, not sure of that though, info should all be readable though.

Hello Sorry I started work on a new job.  Okay, I have the g5 networked.  I have a seagate drive erased and formatted as mac extended journaled.  I couldn't make a disk image of the g5 and restore it to the seagate drive.  I selected destination and the source was the networked leopard drive.  This machine is about to fall apart.  The hard drive is clicking.  I can't install super duper on it.  I guess my only option is to manually drop the leopard hard drive onto the seagate drive unless I can make a disk image of the g5 on my macbook pro.  Then drop that on the external drive.  Kind of limited.

actually i was completely wrong trying to make a disk image of a networked old g5.  I did what you said I plugged the seagate drive directly into the g5 and am trying to make a disk image before it dies.  Hopefully it is working
