unable to install el cap on macintosh hdd error message states it is used for time machine backup

can't install el cap despite following instructions. installer gives one option for installation - my macintosh hdd - then refuses it as destination because "it is used for Time Machine backup" Help!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

thanks for the tips, which I tried but without success. I do not use my Mac HDD for Time machine backups so no backup files could be located. yet the El Cap installer insists ( in effect ) that I do! Really confused.
