Q: Using Disk Utilities to save wedding dvd to mac. Saves separately/not working any advice?

I have followed the below instructions to use Disk Utilites to save my wedding dvd to my desktop mac. But when I do it, is saves in separate files (see links). I have even tried basic copy paste, or drag n drop from drive to folders but they come out the same - separate non-playable files. Please help!! Thank you. Kimmie

Click on “Finder”

Click on “Applications”

Click on “Disk Utilities”

Click on “New Image”

Rename and Save

From drop box choose “DVD/CD Master”

Chose “NONE” for Encryption.

Click “Save” or “Create”.

It does save, but saves as separate files (see link) and non of which play my wedding ! Please advise I am at my wits ends!! The dvd itself does play so nothing is wrong with the dvd.

I don't believe that process would work - if you currently have a DVD with a video on it, you will need to run it through a converter software first (such as MPEG Streamclip or Handbrake) to get it into a format your Mac can recognize. Once you have it in the right format (usually .mov or mpeg2), you can then either use a burn software such as Roxio Toast or Burn to burn to another DVD or import it into iMovie in order to edit or simply export/share it. Or, if you have Roxio Toast, you can also simply copy the DVD content to another DVD (it will not copy copyrighted material).

Thanks for your reply! Here is what I did and where I am at now:

So it did work. I followed these instructions; How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs - Apple Support

Now I have the new burned dvd that that the instructions told me to insert, and it is playing the wedding. It is the one  "Wedding Dvd.cdr"

So, Is it now copied on my mac? see image...if so where and how do I access it? IZsvxMh.png

So I now have been able to burn another dvd disc, and when I ejected it I was surprised to see the wedding playing! It is on my mac via Disk Utility. But how I do not understand! So it is there, but I can not open it unless I am playing DVD Player. Still can not share and export...Any advice?

I've never used Disk utility since I have Roxio Toast, but I believe you cannot do anything with your .cdr except play it on the Mac. As I said previously, you need to get it into a format that can be burned which may be .mov or usually .mpeg2. Since I'm not familiar with this particular Disk Utility process, I do not know how to get that into a different format. I googled .cdr disk utility - you may want to read through those:

So I have downloaded Handbrake, but what do I do next?

I don't know if Handbrake can read .cdr - the easiest is to simply launch Handbrake and it will throw out a window where you can choose the source file - be it your DVD or the .cdr icon (which could be in your Movies folder or on your desktop - if you can't find it, do a search for it) and click on open. The next dialog should be selfexplanatory.
