No image-size dropdown when image pasted

After installing El Cap on two iMacs and one MacAir (from the same downloaded installer) when I paste an image into a new email message, the image shows up but I don't get the familiar "Image Size" dropdown menu that lets you scale to 'small, medium, large." I also can NOT select the image and drag it. However I do get the Markdown option when I hover over the image. It is same on all 3 machines. Maybe the installer was corrupt? But everything else works well?

Ideas?

Maybe trash a plist of some kind?

These are not from Photos app... these are just some .jpg images I have.

I can't select them or move them after the are put in an email document.

Something is corrupted from the El Cap install.

Can I just re-download the installer from the App Store and re-intstall El Cap over itself?

Any ideas other than that to try to fix this?

Are you copying a file or an image from an open window?

If you just copy and paste, you are getting a copy of the current resolution of the image as shown in whatever app you are displaying the image.

If you drag the file or copy/paste the file, you will have the option to change the size.

With an image file, it can resize the image prior to encoding. If you paste in an image, it can't do anything with that but just encode the image as pasted.

OK, well that explains one thing.

But why can't I click on the .jpg image to select it and drag it.

When I hover I get the "Markup" dropdown. But there is no way to select or drag the picture to another part of the email compose window.

I can right-click and view as icon, but that can't be selected either and dragged.

Something with El Cap is screwed up here. I just don't know what it might be.

I have no problem dragging a photos to any part of an email no matter what size is deleted in the drop down menu. Even images that are too small to activate the drop down window can be dragged.

So I think your issue is local. Try the following:

1 - launch Disk Utility and repair the disk.

2 - Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, try there and then reboot normally and try again.
