I Tunes could not connect to the IPod Touch because an invalid response was received from the device.

What do I do when after 4 years when trying to sync my ipod touch to my Itunes on my macbook I get the message "I tunes could not connect to the IPod touch because an invalid response was received from the device"?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)
