Kernal Panic Mac Pro 3.1 - Yosemite 10.10.5

I'm getting a random (?) kernal panic associated with the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement driver

Since it's the power management, I've assumed that it's associated with sleep - but the computer does sleep and wake properly and can function for many hours (days?) without having errors.

This is on a CLEAN install of OSX Yosemite (I think around 10.10.4 then updated to 10.10.5)

Questions:

- this is a software or hardware issue ?

- is there any setting I can change to avoid it (no sleep for example)?

- will upgrading to El Capitan 10.11 help ?

My system

- Model: Mac Pro 3.1 (Early 2008)

- Processor: 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

- RAM: 14 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

- Graphics: Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950, PCIe, 3072 MB (PC version)

kernel panic, machine check, detected by numerous processors at once --

That is a RAM memory problem.

It often show CPU power management as the crash location because that is where the memory error tabulator lives.

Thanks for the info.

That would be odd though, since I've had this exact RAM configuration for over 2 years (since June 2013)

and it's been through both Mountain Lion and Mavericks without this issue...

I haven't changed anything else in my hardware line except a monitor, which I've had for 2-3 months

(it was working fine on Mavericks until my recent 'upgrade' to Yosemite).

Your Mac with Xeon processor has Hardware Error Correction -- single-bit errors are corrected on-the-fly in one extended memory cycle. Double-bit errors cause it to halt on a kernel panic, machine check, discovered by multiple processors, error code 4 or 5, often error overflow or uncorrectable error. This is by design, and is intended to avoid poisoning your data.

When a single-bit error is corrected, it sets some bits that are tabulated in the Background, and can be used to find the errant module. Run this STATIC report to take a snapshot of how they are doing. Any modules accumulating ECC Errors are Bad, and it is only a matter of time before a second error in the same word cause a kernel panic.

thanks again.

I had a quick look at the System Report and the memory seems fine (at least no errors are reported)

As a precaution last night I stripped the machine down fully and cleaned it:

- removed all dust / fluff from the inlet and exhaust fans, main heatsinks & RAM cage, GPU and power supply

- replaced the thermal paste on the CPUs + Northbridge heatsinks

- reseated the RAM and memory cars

There was quite a bit of fluff blocking airflow across both sets of CPU heatsinks, which could have created higher than normal RAM temperatures

(though I don't recall noticing any increased fan speed / noise from any of the 4 main fans or 3 GPU fans).

We'll see if that makes a difference - if not I'll continue by replacing the RAM - half is from OWC (interestingly the ones without serial number !?)

and the other half is from Nemix - both have lifetime warranty...

RAM system report attached.
