Can't connect 13 macbook pro late 2013 to Cinema HD display 30

I can't seem to get my cinema display to connect to the macbook pro with retina late 2013. I am using the mini DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI adapter, retina display goes black then back once I connect the displayport and usb but the cinema display shows nothing. I do see Apple Cinema HD Display in the USB tab but no other reference to the display from here. I have just upgraded to El Capitan also.
