when i try to sign on to itunes i get message that says make sure your network connection is active and try again

When I try to log into iTunes from my computer, I get a message that says Make sure your network connection is active and try again. Help I am so confused!! My phone is not working and says to connect to I Tunes so I have been trying and cannot sign on to I tunes with no luck. Ugh any idea's on phone while we are at it?
