watch won't connect to iPhone camera
trying to use the control on the watch for the camera on my phone, but the watch only
says that the camera app is closed, even though it is clearly open on my phone when
I try to use it.

You should not need to open your Camera app first on your iPhone - your watch should do that.
Try restarting both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off first, then restart your iPhone before restarting your watch:
- To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag the slider to turn off.
- To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
