Why doesn't the trackpad work in text messages? I am using 9.1 on my iPhone 6s Plus

So I picked up my iPhone 6s Plus today in Rose Gold, very happy with it, but ive realized that the track pad does not work in text messages to edit text, im on 9.1, and i cant go back due to the issue of restoring with 9.0.2, is there anyway of fixing it or if it just simply does not work
