Q: Boot Camp disappeared after El Capitan update

I am a sailor and due to report to my ship & sail out this coming Saturday 10/10/2015.

I have a mid-2009 13" silver MBP which also has win10 loaded using boot camp. The Win 10 side has all my USCG certifications, professional licenses, email exchanges with USCG, accounts, etc.

I downloaded and installed El Capitan and after rebooting, I noticed the option of booting up in Win 10 gone. Pressing the Option key gave me 2 options of booting up either in El Capitan or the Recovery Disk. A friend put in the following sudo command, "sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1 rootless=0” and now the boot select screen does not show that option either.

This is what diskutil list shows:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

     #:                              TYPE NAME                               SIZE            IDENTIFIER

     0: GUID_partition_scheme                                         *250.1 GB    disk0

     1:                                EFI EFI                                      209.7 MB   disk0s1

     2:                    Apple_HFS Xxxx Xxxxxxxxx                  154.1 GB  disk0s2

     3:                   Apple_Boot Recovery HD                      650.0 MB   disk0s3

     4:    Microsoft Basic Data                                             75.2 GB     disk0s4

When I type diskutil cs list into Terminal, I get No CoreStorage logical volume groups found.

Typing sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0 got

gpt show: disk0: mediasize=250059350016; sectorsize=512; blocks=488397168

Typing sudo fdisk /dev/disk0 got:

Also, a few months back I had re-partitioned the hard disk with both Yosemite and Win 7 on it, to make space for Win 10.

How can I undo the sudo command and get back the Win 10 partition? I can't see the Boot Camp/Win 10 partition neither in .

Someone has suggested that I use the sudo bless –folder /System/Library/CoreServices –setBoot command. Should I?

PLEASE HELP. I need to get access to my documents and co email before Saturday.

Thanks in advance.

This looks like your partition table.

GPT 3 StartGPT 3 SizeGPT 3 EndNTFS StartSector OffsetNTFS SizeNTFS EndSector Offset (MB)NTFS(Gb)Disk EndDisk Difference

Scroll down to the partition with the NTFS Start value (the second MS Data in your list) and press 'p' to list files.

Your screen should look similar to the following (please post a screen shot or what you see).

Scroll down and you should see System Volume Information. It will confirm that this is the correct partition. I can then give you the next steps.

Install GPT Fdisk (aka gdisk).  Leave your Testdisk display and start a new Terminal Window. You need to use the following steps. If you see any error messages during the following steps, please stop and post back here with the error message. The following steps have values from your Testdisk output (and you can verify) in Steps 7 and 8. Please notice the'+' sign in step 8 (this is called offset notation). The text in parentheses is for informational purpose to describe the action being taken. Gdisk has one-character commands except when entering numbers.

    Rebuild GPT4 using start/end offsets

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (print the full list of parts)
    3. D  (delete)
    4. 4  (part 4)
    5. N  (new part)
    6. 4  (part 4)
    7. 302700544 ( - Start offset in sectors or the start point for Bootcamp part)
    8. +185696249 ( - Size offset, as opposed to End offset)
    9. 0700 (Windows part type)
    10. P  (print list of all parts just to see what changes will be made)
    11. W (Write the new GPT)
    12. Y  (Yes! really write the new GPT)

This will delete and re-write the GPT partition info for /dev/disk0s4.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers. Please see the sample Q&A as an example. These steps can be repeated if you make a mistake before you get to Step 12, otherwise start from Step 1 for these steps. Step 6 has numbers which are typed with a space between the numbers. Please see the sample Q&A before you execute these steps.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (Print list of parts)
    3. R  (Recover)
    4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
    5. H (chooses Hybrid)
    6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3 4
    7. Y  (Good for GRUB question)
    8. N  (part 2 boot flag)
    9. N  (part 3 boot flag)
    10. Y  (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
    11. O  (print current Hybrid MBR)
    12. W (Write the new MBR)
    13. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
    14. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?

    Hello Loner T

    Thank you very much.

Followed your directions and could see Boot Camp in:

    1. Finder

    2. Startup Disk &

    3. Disk Utility.

I could enter the Windows side of the disk thru Finder and access my documents. However, when I tried tried holding the Option Key and enter Windows, I could not and got the error message: Kernel is missing or contains errors. Error Code: 0x0000098. So, in a way Test 4 was unsuccessful.

Google tells me to have an install disk ready. I guess I'll have to download Win 10, create an ISO file and do some repairs , unless you know of an alternate method , which would be even better as I won't be back home from my ship till mid-January 2016

    One question:

BootCamp Assistant gives me 2 options: A) Download the latest Windows Support software from Apple and B) Remove Windows 7.

Do I really need to download? Apple no longer supports the mid-2009 MBP for Win 10 and after some Googling, I download the pertinent software for the camera, keyboard, mouse and speakers that enables me to run W10 smoothly.

Thank you once again for saving my bacon

Can you boot in Windows Safe Mode? If you can get to command prompt, try running chkdsk. If that does not work then you will need startup repair. This error can also happen if your BCD is corrupt, which can be fixed using Windows Startup Repair.

You can use W7/W8+ drivers and install them with Administrative rights and computability set to W7/W8 as an option.

At least you have access to your files, which can be backed up.

Nope. Unfortunately not. W10 automatically goes into Repair/recovery mode and gives me the blue screen with that error message. But at least, thanks to you, I can access my documents. And, thankfully, I have access to most of my passwords to the important web sites via cloud

Once again, thanks for helping and saving me

Can you try using Shift or Shift+F8 to see if you can a Recovery Console for Windows?

No. Cannot do that either. Get the same screen. But, I've run into another problem. How do I get Apple to boot from the W10 ISO DVD as till I do that, I cannot repair W10? I'd prefer to repair rather than doing a re-install. Any ideas?

    Thanks.
