Apple Configurator 2 - Show disconnected devices

Hi,

Since we made the update to Configurator 2 we can no longer see the offline iOS devices like we could in v1.7.x.

Is there a way that this can be turned back on? Seems a bit daft not to be able to see them... especially from an auditing point of view.

Thanks

So after having a really good play with AC2 I've come to the conclusion that there are few fundamental differences in the way that this one and the old one are supposed to work.

By the looks of it Apple have designed AC2 to be used more as a management 'station'. To put it differently, in the old AC1 the one Mac would control a set of iPads... in AC2 you could use any number of Macs to control the same set of iPads. The iPads would then not 'belong' to a Mac so there wouldn't be a database containing the information.

I hope that makes some sense! I think we're going to have to suck it up and live with it.

You can export the connected device information from AC2 so that might be the only way to do it really.

Less than ideal.

Apple has kinda gotten to the point to where Apple Configurator is more useful as a setup tool in conjunction with DEP than for pure 100% management. Its just not feasible to use AC anymore for more than 50 devices as the app just isn't robust enough to handle the needs of most educational and commercial customers.

Apple's DEP program in conjuction with MDM has really become more beneficial in the long run . DEP allows you to chose your own MDM management solution: OSX Server, Meraki, etc and wireless manage your devices without having to have them tethered to a macbook. MDM solutions with DEP also prohibit the removal of the configuration profiles and thus are just as secure now as AC profiles, something that wasn't always the case.

We have several schools with AC, and several that use OSX Server as a management solution and MDM is slowing gathering more steam in terms of ease of use and support-ability.
