I also enjoy the Apple TV and have a couple Apple TV 2nd generations.
The System Requirements say you should be fine but you may need to update your Apple TV.
Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV - Apple Support
- Apple TV (2nd generation or later) with the latest Apple TV software
- For mirroring your display or extending your desktop, any of the following Mac computers with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later:
Note the link to How to update software on your Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation) - Apple Support
- Select Settings > General > Update Software. Apple TV checks for an available update; if one is available, a download message should appear.
- Click Download and Install to start the download process.
Do not disconnect your Apple TV during the update process. The Apple TV status light may flash slowly during the update and restart process. This is expected behavior.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

Oct 6, 2015 2:28 PM in response to Nubz N.by tractordoll,My Apple TV 2 is running with 5.0.2. If I select Update Software, it says "your apple tv software is up to date". If I try to do a factory restore I get the following error "apple tv can't download the latest update right now. Try again later". Do you know if the version I am running is the correct and latest version of the software?

Oct 7, 2015 7:22 AM in response to Nubz N.by tractordoll,Hi I managed to use a micro-usb cable to the apple tv 2 and update the software through iTunes. When I tried doing a factory reset from the apple tv it didn't work, but, when connected to the Mac it did work and now my airplay is back and running perfectly!

Jan 25, 2016 1:52 PM in response to Nubz N.by LeeBiker,I was having the same problem where AirPlay stopped working on El Capitan 10.11.3 with my Apple TV. My Apple TV settings are set to ON for automatic software updates, so I assumed that my ATV had the latest software. After trying all sorts of other potential fixes, I went back to the ATV and did a manual software update. Lo and behold, it DID find an update (not sure why automatic updates wouldn't have picked it up). Anyway, after the manual ATV software update to version 7.x, AirPlay is now working again for me. Hope this helps.
