Your photos won't appear in iTunes. They must be imported using iTunes then saved to your Pictures folder on a PC.
Use an image capture application on the laptop and not iTunes.
If you are using a Mac use Image Capture. It's in the Applications folder. Connect your iPhone and start Image Capture. Your iPhone will be recognized as a camera and you can transfer photos and videos from the Camera Roll album to the Mac.
If you are using a PC use whatever image capture or camera application you have on the PC. Your iPhone will be recognized as a camera and you can transfer photos and videos from the Camera Roll album to the PC.
