2012 27" iMac will not start up

I have a 2012 27" iMac with a 1TB drive. I am unable to get the machine to start up. I get a gray screen with a status bar. It gets to approx 15% progress and then shuts down again. I have disconnected power and reconnected. No luck. Hoping there might be steps out there to interrupt the start up process and reset???

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.

From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to verify and repair the disk if necessary then restore OS X using OS X Recovery.
