Merged Contacts with iOS 9 update

I have an iPhone 6 and when i updated my phone to iOS 9 some of my contacts that had the same first name were merged together. for example i had a person saved as frank and then another contact as frank smith. now both numbers are under frank smith and there is no contact just frank. has anyone else had this problem? it has led me to call/text the wrong person a handful of times.
