Q: What happened to my scanner El Capitan?

Thanks Apple! After I upgraded to El Capitan I went to use my scanner and behold I can't see it anymore. I have an Epson perfection 2450 Photo scanner which I use for scanning and faxing. So at the present I no longer have a scanner or a fax, thanks Apple! I went to the Epson website to re-install the driver, that didn't work. Then I removed it from Printers and scanners in System Preferences and tried to add it but now my network does't even see it anymore. Does anyone else have this problem?

No I am afraid that they cannot simply issue a patch. For some reason it is due to an increased secrutiy level at root, introduced by Apple. Canon cannot start issuing patches designed to turn off security protection.

I read somewhere, where ? Now forgotten, that this new Apple security level can be turned off, if you are competent to fiddle with Terminal. However, that does not just make it possible to use a scanner, it turns off that whole level of protection.

As for the answer below that it may be a career move by Canon, well we have been having a lot of silly changes by Apple loss of optical drive, for example, flakey upgrades. If it is a career move for anybody, it is for Windows

After nearly 90 minutes of google and reinstaling I just found your post - 100% fixed my epson issue with the scanner. Or should I say my mac issue!

    Thanks.

Just wanted to add this worked for me with my Epson Perfection 4490 Photo. Running fine on El Capitan on a Mid-2011 Mac Mini.

I pulled out my old Dell this weekend after El Capitan upgrade that lost photos and mail, screwed up printing, etc. I loved Apple for two years.  Wish it was what it used to be.

In Image Capture v6.7, I don't see any command under the file menu that states Reset TWAIN devices.

I was trying to use my scanner through a USB hub. It did not work.  The USB cord from the scanner had to be directly connected a MAC usb port.

My old Epson Perfection 1650 is now working with Image Capture.

One other thing.   The image capture application does not work very well to call up the Epson scanner.

It is better to use the Printers & Scanners Preferences. PrintersScanners.jpg

I had to download the Epson Software drivers for the Image Capture App. (ICA) from Epson's web site.

I then had to connect the scanner and wait for the App store to indicate an Apple update to Apple's drivers for Epson scanner/printers.  I then performed the App Store update process for the Apple driver update.
