Having trouble downloading video to iMovie after OS upgrade

After upgrading to El Capitan (10.11) a week ago I now am having trouble trying to download video to iMovie (10.0.9). Downloading from a Canon (Vixia HF R10A) video camera. When I attempt to import the video shows up but when I save to a movie library the import screen immediately goes away and while the imported video appears to be there it is one frozen image and a few seconds of garbled audio then silence for the balance of the clip. I have attempted to delete the video clip and try again with the same results.
