my kids started with iPods and since have gotten iPads mini 2. They iPod and iPad use the same Apple ID. the iPods can only be updated to iOS 6.1.6. I was hoping to use the iPods as a monitoring device for the kids text But the messaging feature will not send or receive. Do they have to have the same iOS level to sync?
What do you mean by "sync" in your sentence "Do they have to have the same iOS level to sync?"?
If all the devices have the same email address(s) listed in Settings>Messages>Send and Receive then all the devices will get all Messages.
II've tried to text from the iPods to my phone number and email but on both iPods it just shows like it will send and then it says message failure. I can send from the iPads to my number no problem. I want to be able to see the text from iPads on the iPods that share the same Apple ID. Does texting not work on iOS 6.1.6 anymore?
The newer iPads support Continuity which allows then to send and receive texts from devices without the Messages app. That was added by iOS 8. It is not supported by the 4G iPod.
I'm using the messaging app to send and receive on all the devices. Are you saying that without Continuity that I won't be able to send receive text anymore on iPods?
No. The iPod will not be able to send or receive any texts from or send any texts to devices which do not use the Apple Messages app.
