Playlist picking unchecked songs?

I have this selection of songs that for whatever reason iTunes is in love with. I love the album, just not this selection of songs, mostly because of iTunes. I even unchecked the songs, and they are still being picked, I eventually had to delete them entirely from my library, I don't like doing that, I thought that simply unchecking a song would make it unplayable for playlists?
