Ransomeware

iPad Model A1337

64GB

iOS 5.1.1

I am blocked from accessing Safari. I have an FBI Warning stating that my mobile device has been blocked for safety reasons. If I pay a $500.00 fine I can regain access and avoid prosecution. How can I remove this "ransomeware" and regain access to Safari. Also is there away to block this from happening again.

Thank You !

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Force Quit Safari and relaunch it while holding down the shift key.

Download and run the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac,to remove any Adware or Malware that may have made it's way onto your Mac. If you are not comfortable with this (The App can be trashed immediately after use) then you can go with the manual but more difficult steps here.

For anyone else finding this discussion, it's fortunately impossible to follow bogus advice to run "anti-malware" software on an iPad—which would be pointless even if you could run it, because the problem has nothing to do with malware.

That would be an opinion Linc. Obviously the answer given solved the OP's issue. I do not know where you derive the idea that it protects against Malware, as that is the users responsibility to be more diligent with what they download and install, as the free version I recommended does not protect against Malware being installed, but simply identifies it and gets rid of it. We know you do not personally like programs such as etrecheck and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac but they have solved many an issue for posters here. As with this thread.

Just for anyone else finding this discussion. 😉

But none of them work on an iPad. And there's no way to launch Safari by holding a shift key on an iPad.

The actual answer:

It is not ransomware on your phone. It is your browser being hijacked. You are probably best off not visiting sites where this happens; there's a good chance the sites have been hacked. To clear the problem (which may be only a temporary fix):

  • Turn on Airplane mode
  • Press HOME once; wait a couple of seconds, and double-press HOME
  • Scroll to Safari and flick the screen image up to kill the Safari app
  • Press HOME
  • Go to Settings/Safari, scroll down, and tap Clear History and Website Data
  • Press HOME
  • Reboot the phone by holding HOME and SLEEP at the same time until an Apple logo appears
  • Turn off Airplane mode

This should fix the immediate problem.
