activate without sim card..

i bought a cheap 5s and i want to set it up with a sim, so my friend has a 5s also and is willing to swap sims so i can get it set up, but he says whenever he takes the sim out it locks up his phone and he can't use it. if i put it in mine set it up, then take it out will it lock mine aswell?
