proximity sensor stops while bluetooth is connected

It seems that since 9.0.2 (maybe earlier) the when a Bluetooth device is connected, the proximity sensor does not turn off the screen. The result is an active display when it shouldn't be like sitting in a pocket or case.

Is there anyway to control this functionality?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.0.2

I wouldn't expect the proximity sensor to work with bluetooth or a headset. Try the Sleep button to shut off the screen. It shouldn't hang up if you are still on the call.
