El Capitan killed DVD drive

After updating to El Capitan on my mid 2010 iMac | 3.08 GHz Intel Core i3 | 16 GB memory 1067MHzDDR3, the computer:

  1. has lost its built-in DVD drive.
  2. does not recognize the drive. Finder cannot "see" it
  3. Insert disc (which, yes, works find in other DVD drives) and it spins it around back and forth for awhile and then spits it out

This seems to be a fairly widespread problem.

Mid 2010 13'' Macbook Pro (MacbookPro 7,1)

Same issue.

I installed El Capitan and immediately noticed the DVD drive was unusable.
I attempted to fix by resetting PRAM and SMC as per an online tut to no avail.
I attempted to fix by clean installing El Capitan, where the original install was performed over top of Yosemite. The drive is still currently unusable.

Second time an Apple software update has had a negative effect on the hardware (first time iPhone 4S iOS 7 bluetooth/wifi issue).

If I can get the drive working when my replacement Snow Leopard disc arrives tomorrow I'll stay with Snow Leo, the software this computer was built for.
Upgrading just isn't worth the risk anymore, IMO.

Did you bother to read the OP?

1) optical drive works

2) update OS to new version

3) optical drive non-functional

I would blame the OS, too, since that's all that was changed.

Yes, I have read... and here we go again.

This happens for, let's say, 1000 users.

This DOES NOT happen for, let's say, 10000000 users.

What is more likely: a general fault of the OS, or some problem with the particular software installation (old software, crappy antiviruses, incompatible drivers...)?

Jun 26, 2018 1:03 AM in response to Community User

Macbook Pro 7,1 (13'' Mid 2010)

I'm now running Snow Leopard and my Superdrive is fully functional. I even installed Snow Leopard via DVD, so in my case El Capitan did not kill my superdrive. There may be an issue with the latest software communicating with this hardware, I don't know.

I've since tried to Skype my family and connect a bluetooth device and have noticed that both the built in camera and bluetooth aren't recognised by OS X.
I don't use these often so I can't be certain where to lay blame, all I know is the last time I used them both successfully was with Yosemite.
I hope my logic board isn't on the way out.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Jan 3, 2017 4:41 AM in response to cyranobob

Hi thanks for the info.

I've formatted and partitioned my USB ready waiting just not got around to the next part yet.

I do use Adobe Creative Suite, I found opening the Terminal first before running the install worked a charm to get rid of the missing files error message. It just seems to boot something the install doesn't.

All this just so I can have windows to play Sims lol!

This is a long thread and I can't see who tried what, so: did you ever try just a clean install of El Capitan on a separate drive? Reset NVRAM and SMC?

FWIW, El Capitan per se did not kill any DVD drive. Most likely there was a software conflict with something else.

I am on Sierra now but used El Capitan for a year and had no trouble with either the built-in DVD drive in my iMac or the one from my MBP which I used on an external USB enclosure (since I put an SSD in its place a few years back).

May 16, 2017 7:45 AM in response to Lee Dunkelberg

I also have this problem on my Mid-2010 iMac (11,2) with built in SuperDrive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-5680H). This issue was driving me nuts for the longest time until I stumbled upon a fix via Terminal command for disabling some sort of security setting that was apparently not allowing the loading of DVDs in my SuperDrive. CDs would load just fine but attempting to load a DVD would result in the drive spinning the disc up and down several times until ultimately ejecting the disc without so much as an error message.

Of course, I'm having trouble finding the link I used to locate the Terminal command, so hopefully someone here will know what I'm trying to describe... The first time I ran the command, the DVD I was attempting to load magically was mounted in the Finder! After some time, the SuperDrive reverted to its old ways and stopped mounting DVDs.

I still haven't updated the iMac to the latest OS, so perhaps that will be my next step. I know there is nothing wrong with the drive because I've tried all the usual tricks: PRAM, SMC, disc cleaner, jamming a credit card with microfiber cloth, etc. etc. If I install the newest OS I'll report back with any results I have.

EDIT: I found what I was looking for: the System Integrity Protection (SIP) was what I disabled via Terminal in order to get DVDs to load again: http://www.macworld.com/article/2986118/security/how-to-modify-system-integrity- protection-in-el-capitan.html

Jun 10, 2017 1:20 PM in response to Macp@TO

Same thing with me. I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro. After El Capitan, the DVD drive stopped reading CDs and DVDs. They will insert, spin around for about 30 seconds, and then spit them out. I also had an external Aluratek USB 2 DVD reader/writer. I know that it worked, but after El Capitan, my Mac won't even see it.

Judging from the very high number of identical problems that I have read on this forum, it is definitely an issue that Apple needs to address, and not just rely on individual users with their duct tape and bailing wire solutions!

I will hold off buying any more Apple products until then.

kitcatalina wrote:

My dvd player is part of my imac, not a 3rd party.

Why doesn't it work?

Because of other stuff that you have installed on your mac that either is not compatible with the OS version, or has bugs.

The DVD drives on macs (either built-in or external, Apple or third party) still work on El Capitan and Sierra.

For a small number of users who have had them not work, it always comes down to the same type of problem - conflicts with other software.

This is easy to prove. Just install a clean version of the OS and your dvd drive works.

To find out what may be causing the problem in the first place please run Etrecheck (an utility created by a respected member of this community) and post its report here. From seeing the report we may be able to figure out what may be causing the conflict.

Jun 15, 2017 3:13 AM in response to kitcatalina

Not sure what you are replying to when you say "don't think so".

kitcatalina wrote:

DVD worked.

Installed el capitan.

DVD stopped working.

I take it that you are implying that the blame lies with El Capitan.

If you want to make that an act of faith, I can't help you.

The claim that dvd drives don't work with El Capitan in general is simply false.

There have been people with problems, but for overwhelming majority simply carried on working.

You may think this is a big thread, but there were many millions of El Capitan users with no problem at all.

You either want to figure out the cause or you can stay in your corner and assign blame.

If the former, please provide the Etrecheck report and I will try to help. If the latter, there is nothing else to do.
