May 26, 2016 2:12 PM in response to Lee Dunkelbergby Merlin1952,I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with internal superdrive that has worked flawlessly since new. However after upgrading to El Capitan 10.11.5 earlier this week, the drive just "disappeared". The system simply does not acknowledge its existence. I have tried everything suggested on this thread short of a "clean install" of El Capitan to absolutely no effect. I am clearly not alone with this problem as some 18,000 views of this thread and more than 90 posts would suggest.

May 27, 2016 11:53 AM in response to Lee Dunkelbergby eyalve,I upgraded to El capitan on Oct. 2015.
I have a build in superdrive that worked perfectly and stopped working with El capitan.
I have tried every fix everyone posted and failed.
I gave up.
its been 6 months and I hoped that apple would care enough about its costumers and release a fix - but nada.
not only is there no fix but apple completely ignores it!
I have followed the threads and saw that people are buying new external drives in order to work.
Is this fine?
not to me.
the issue is widespread and originates from apple engineers.
the fix should come from apple!

Jun 6, 2016 11:01 AM in response to rkaufmann87by Nicolene Erasmus,I feel exactly the same as Lee! It is NOT nice when you desperately need information stored on a cd, and after the upgrade your Macbook does not recognise the superdrive. I was advised by the staff at the iStore to buy a new superdrive (really expensive!) which I did. I connected the new drive to both my Macbooks and it did not work either. I then started to suspect that it was an El Capitan problem. When I connected it to my husband's Macbook (he has not yet upgraded to El Capitan), it worked. I have spent hours on the internet trying to find a solution, but it seems as if Apple has not yet solved the problem. And it is 8 months later since the first complaints started to appear. I am now going to leave it in the capable hands of the Apple iStore staff and let them figure it out.

Level 6 (12,152 points)
Mac OS XI have used the dvd drive with el capitan, both the internal on a 2011 imac and an external via usb in a retina mbp.
I Submit that not EC but some older software that people have installed is causing a conflict. That would not be too hard to test. Make a clean install on an external drive or a second partition. I bet the dvd drive will work on that.

Jun 6, 2016 1:41 PM in response to Lee Dunkelbergby j.esler,We can add one more to the list. I recently bought a 2009 Mac Pro with El Capitan preinstalled and the DVD burner will burn CDs but not DVDs. I get various error messages, "the disc did not burn for unknown reason" etc... , or sometimes it will start to burn but then quit. Come on Apple! Step Up!

Jun 6, 2016 10:05 PM in response to Luis Sequeira1by Merlin1952,Hi Luis, I believe that you're absolutely correct. A clean install on a spare usb-connected HD is exactly what I did and the internal Superdrive on my late 2008 mbp works as advertised. "Upgrading" the old system effectively made the internal Superdrive invisible. When I used Migration Assistant to bring all my apps and data on to the new, clean (and working) EC system, the Superdrive vanished. I'd be interested to identify and remove the offending old code, but don't really know where to start trying to isolate it. All suggestions welcome.

At this point, the usual next step is to run Etrecheck. This is a tool by one respected member of this community. It produces a report that describes the hardware and software on your machine (it does not show any personal information). By looking at its report, one can often notice possible suspects. You can post the report here.

Jun 7, 2016 12:40 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1by Nicolene Erasmus,Luis, me being on level 1 is a bit of an overstatement! I guess it is because there is no level 0 here. "Etrecheck", "clean install" "remove the old code" etc are phrases I fail to comprehend. I just want to connect my (very expensive) superdrive to my (very expensive) Macbook, insert a cd and be able to read the information. I don't want to spend hours on the internet trying to figure out how to make it work. But I found a solution elsewhere - one easy enough for me to understand. Connect the superdrive, and restart the Macbook. It works. I salute you guys who are clever enough to figure these things out.
-
Jun 7, 2016 12:44 AM in response to Merlin1952by Nicolene Erasmus,Connect the superdrive, restart your computer and hope that it works. It worked for me. I found the solution after spending hours of "research" - the only solution easy enough for me to understand.

The "unknown" should be your dvd drive. On my iMac I see the model of the dvd drive.
You have a lot of cruft, probably accumulated over the years. Lots of login items, launch agents and such. In particular, some of that stuff is from 2009, which means it programmed for a much older version of the OS.
I would try this simple thing: start in Safe Mode, and run Etrecheck then. It is quite possible that the dvd drive shows up properly then. If so, it will testify to the fact that some of that software you have is causing the dvd drive to not be recognized properly.
(To start in Safe Mode, press the power button and immediately press and hold the Shift key; your mac will boot and work slowly while in Safe Mode - that is normal).

Jun 7, 2016 12:46 PM in response to Luis Sequeira1by Merlin1952,Hi Luis,
Thanks for all your advice. I agree that the "unknown" device should be the superdrive.
I ran EtreCheck in Safe Mode, but sadly the problem persists even there. The report is below.
Another interesting point to consider are that, unlike most other people's reports on their versions of this problem, in my case the DVD is not automatically ejected. It remains in the drive until I start in Recovery Mode and use Disk Utility to eject it.
Anyway, even if we do somehow manage to identify the exact problem, it would be good to clean out all the old "cruft". So I think that I will do a completely clean install of EC and than manually add all the features and apps that I actually use now.
Thanks again for all your help. I'll keep you posted, but it will probably take several days to get back to normal operation.

Jun 9, 2016 7:34 PM in response to Lee Dunkelbergby cyranobob,This may not address all the issues here, but I can report that I have resolve4d my 'CD burning' issue with El Capitan....at least for now. I upgraded my 2013 model year iMac to EC a month ago and have not been able to successfully burn a music CD with my external Superdrive since then. After days of searching thru chat forums and talking with Apple support, I finally just re-installed the OS (along with Java SE) and tried a test CD burn. It worked. Still expecting something to go wrong, but guess I'm cool for now.

Jun 10, 2016 4:16 AM in response to Lee Dunkelbergby Ian_Digman,After trying all the clever solutions on here (learnt a lot about the Mac on the way) I took my computer physically apart to clean it due to a different issue.
Although having previously tried the lens cleaning simple solution near the beginning of this thread, totally cleaning out the inside of the machine of all accumulated dust I now have a fully working DVD drive again. Not sure if there is some form of heat management in play here but happy to have found a solution.
