Why does calendar event on watch face sometimes begin with an exclamation?

I have my Apple Watch face configured to show the next calendar event along the bottom of the screen. Not often, but sometimes, the event will be preceded by a small white circle containing a black exclamation point. What does this mean? I have noticed no "rhyme or reason" for this. For example, it does not seem to mean that the event is very soon.

Hi Mike

The exclamation mark indicates that you have a scheduling conflict / overlapping events in your calendar.
