contacts missing or empty in ios 9.02

When I open my contacts app or view contacts from within the phone app, there are only a small number of the contacts I should have and when I open any of them, there is no data (i.e. the name only).

I can access data from individual contact entries by starting to address an email or a text.

Message lists are in my phone but the cell number, not the name of the contact, is at the top. When I click on 'i' for information, the app closes.

Similarly, if I am in the list of (detail free) contacts, in the app or the message app, and I click to add a contact, the app closes.

I have turned off contacts in Settings for gmail, Exchange and the cloud, then turned them back on, doing a soft reboot between each, that has made no change. I also did a complete restore on my phone, no change.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
