i can't import video created on iPhone into iMovie

I uploaded some video shot on iPhone 4s into my MacBook pro. initially couldn't see the video when i tried to import so saved the clips to a folder on the desktop. I can select the videos but they don't appear in iMovie.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
