You would have to reinstall the OS or download the installer and use Pacifist to extract the application.

I had this issue with TextEdit and Preview. Deleting the com.apple.xxx files in ~/Library/Preferences/ and ~/Library/Components as suggested on other forums didn't help. At best it solved the issue for a couple of days.

Problem was coming from wrong permissions on some font files. Repairing permissions on the Fonts folder solved my issue.

    Open Terminal and type

        sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs /Library/Fonts/

You will be asked for your password (sudo means get super user powers)

Repairing permissions used to be available from the Disk Utility app but Apple removed it since Mavericks or Yosemite for some reason.

TextEdit crashed all the time after I installed El Capitan. I even took the MacBookPro to Apple and they ended up doing a clean re-install of El Capitan which didn't help. But after a lot of web searching I saw a mention of Fonts. I had changed the fonts for TextEdit in Preferences - the Rich Text to Palatino. So I changed both fonts back to their default: Menlo Regular for Plain Text and Helvetica for Rich Text. No crashing since then. This might be chance but I thought I'd pass it on.

Textedit was constantly crashing. I tried repairing font permissions as suggested by ptbarber. Text edit again quit unexpectedly. I reopened the app, and reset all prefs to default. So far, this seems to have solved the problem. Maybe the combination of those two attempts?

Try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?

    Restart holding the "shift" key.

(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)

    Thanks.

No luck. Even in safe mode Text Edit won't load. Unexpected termination or something... sorry I didn't remember the exact error message. I tried the reload option but that did the same thing.

My issue was also due to a font I deleted. What worked for me was removing this folder: ~Library/Containers/com.apple.TextEdit

Once I reopened TextEdit, the com.apple.TextEdit folder regenerated itself and the program was finally stable again.
