Quicktime screen recording pause/resume in 10.4

I am desperately looking for a way to pause and resume screen recordings in Quicktime 10.4 for Mac, but the posts that I have seen previously do not work. Is there a hidden keystroke combo that I can use for this purpose? If not, which is the best screen recorder for Mac that has this capability?
