Expectations for MacPro 2,1 with 16G of RAM?

MacPRO 2,1

16G RAM

ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB

500G SS Boot Drive

What expectations should I have for this machine working in iMovie?

I want to take HD videos off of a camcorder (8G files) and load them into iMovie and create a movie out of a number of clips.

It used to work well but now takes hours to import video from camera into iMovie and even longer to render the movies.

Has time time come to dump this beast and go with a newer Mac?

Appreciate all comments related to

  • Tuning tips
  • upgrades (video card, etc)
  • likely culprits I should look at

Thanks in advance.

Then it may have a failing Hard Drive, or you may have loaded it up with Junk that is slowing it down.

The first candidate to be discarded is any so-called "anti-Virus" software. They are all junk. They slow down your Mac while making a Big Show of scanning every file they encounter (and more) for things that are not a threat to you. The warm fuzzy felling they give you (that you are protected because they checked "everything") encourages you to let down your guard, which makes you vulnerable to the real threats, which require you to be un-skeptical.

There are couple of quick checks:

Launch Disk Utility, and sleet each drive in turn and inspect its SMART status. This is a very weak indicator, so if it shows anything other than "Verified", the drive has failed. The drive still may have problems.

Select each Mac OS Volume on your non-boot drives, and run Disk Utility ( Repair Disk [directory]) I have taken to writing it that way because although it reads the entire Directory, and checks it for consistency, it does not read any data blocks from files at all. But passing that test will give you a warm feeling that the drive is probably OK. It should take a bout five minutes for a fairly fill drive. An hour for a typical drive is a problem indication.

To Disk Utility ( Repair Disk [directory]) on the Boot drive, you can be content with (Verify Disk [directory]), or you can boot to the 10.6 Installer/Utilities DVD, and run Disk Utility from there; or you can restart in Safe Mode (which does the equivalent in the first five minutes while it is starting up, then loads a very minimal set of extensions, excluding all non-Apple extensions. If your Mac seems fast under Safe Mode, but slow under regular mode, it is likely dues to something your have added. Safe Mode requires you to provide your username and password, even if you normally auto-login.
