27" Apple Cinema Display charging cable no longer working

I've had my 27" Apple monitor for over 3-4 years now and all of a sudden the power connection to my MBP is not functioning. Starting about a week ago I noticed the small green light on the power connection begin to fade in erratic patterns and now when I go to attach it to my MBPw/R it just blinks rapidly and doesn't charge at all. I've cleaned the terminals (which didn't look dirty at all) and have no idea what's wrong or what can be done to fix this.

I now use the supplied power cable that came with the computer itself, so I know the problem isn't from the laptop, but I shouldn't have to use that with a $1,000 monitor. Any suggestions on what might be causing this or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated!
