I get the above error while trying to upgrade my 2010 MacBook Pro from Yosemite. I've been attempting for more than 10 hours. Spoken to an advisor over the phone 3 times. Have tried installing through recovery mode. Still nothing. I didn't back up before. So don't really want to attempt a clean install.
Anyone else had similar problems and found a solution?

The answer is likely in that log, as they say. But you are displaying the very boring END of the report in the background, and the good stuff is much farther up in the report.
one simple check --- did you run out of disk space?
No, can't have run out of disk space. Have at least 250gb left. I have a 1TB crucial SSD
Using a third-party SSD? have you been using TRIM?
The new Mac OS X will bring in over 350,000 new files, and if your drive has not been erased or TRIM-ed in a while, there will not be enough available free SuperBlocks for trouble-free performance.
I also hit this generic error. Try holding shift to enter safe mode when booting--- for me, this got it past whatever point it was stuck at, and then in safe mode it finished the installation/initial setup.
