Macbook Air always requires password after upgrade to El Capitan

My mac has been having an issue with not being able to wake from sleep, I just have a black screen and have to force shut down. I have wiped the drive and completely reinstalled the OS to no avail, same problem is right there waiting for me when I set everything back up. The problem does not happen in safe mode. Now, with the upgrade to El Capitan, I am required to enter a password every time I log on to the computer even though I have turned off the screen lock in preferences....is anyone else having this problem?
