1st generation ipod touch won't sync with itunes

i recently bought an original ipod touch off someone, synced it to my computer and it worked the first time, it's a 16gb and had about 200 songs on it. I go to plug it in today and my mac says "getting invalid response" from the device and i have no idea what to do. I tried restarting everything, even restoring the ipod to factory settings but nothing has worked. Every time i plug it in it makes a weird little beep noise then it pops up that it has a "invalid response" can anyone help me?

Same problem except I have had my iPod from new and have been connected to itunes for what, 12 years or more and now get the same prompt about an invalid response. Is this Apple's way of saying it's too old, buy a new one, even though yours works just fine and "had" 600+ songs on it? Just when I was thinking about a new 32 GB iPad but if this is an Apple tactic to get you to upgrade then I think I'll go with a Samsung Galaxy instead.

Check your USB connections

Errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4005, 4013, 4014. You might also see a message that includes "invalid response."

If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you might not be able to update or restore.

To narrow down the issue, try different equipment:

If you still see the error message, check for hardware issues.
