My iPad crashes and has to be hard reset when not being used

my I pad crashes when it is not plugged in and not being used. The battery charges to 100% Then I start using it. If I stop for a minute it will crash and takes me several attempts of hard resetting it before it will restart.what Could be the problem?

iPad 2, iOS 9.0.1
