Macbook pro 13 not detecting Cinema HD Display 30

Just bought a mini displayport to dual link dvi adapter from apple store, it detects a usb Apple Cinema HD Display but no indications of thunderbolt or display connection. Just shows a blank screen. When I connect the Macbook pro retina screen goes blank then back to normal. The display works with my sony with a USB 3.0 adapter but not a dual link adapter. Not sure if I should replace the dual link adapter or an issue with el capitan.
