updating my OS?

Hi, I'm trying to use my ipod touch that apple reset, but iTunes says I need a newer version which requires os 10.9 or higher, so, I need a quick fix... I'm using MacBookPro5,5 with a 2.53 GHz processor, 4 gigs ram, and my brand new backup drive doesn't work! Would I be able to run 10.9 on it or do I need a new computer? I don't plan on upgrading the hardware any further because its 6 years old! thank you very much
