how do i transfer movies from my iMac to my macbook air by using thunderbolt or lightning cables

If you have WiFi it won’t be as fast as target disk mode with Thunderbolt cables but it might be more convenient depending on your physical set up. Open System Preferences, select the Sharing Tab and select File Sharing on the desktop computer. It should then appear as sharable in the sidebar of your notebook’s Finder window.
