Q: Mouse and Touchpad not clicking after sleep - hard restart needed

Hi,

I have just updated to El Capitan and every time I put the mac to sleep, the touchpad and mouse clicks do not work anymore. Gestures do. I need to perform a hard restart every time I wake up the Mac.

I am using an external monitor, mouse and keyboard, all from non-Apple brands, such as Logitech and Dell. However I would like to stress the fact that even the built-in touchpad does not click.

This is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)

Same problem here. Trackpad loses functionality after waking from sleep (and lid closure on MackBook Pro, 15" mid-2014).

Running newest El Capitan 10.11.4. Plugged into an external monitor and USB peripherals. Only Bluetooth device is Logitech mouse. I've deleted previously sync'd Magic Mouse and turned off "Allow Bluetooth to wake..."

With a clean boot, everything works fine, including trackpad. Then I select Apple Menu -> Sleep and close the lid after everything goes dark. Upon open the lid and tapping a key to wake, the trackpad ceases to work. Onboard keyboard works. Everything else works. Just no trackpadding.

Once I reboot, everything — including trackpad — works again.

If the screen just goes to sleep/dark and woken up — without the Mac going into full sleep — the trackpad functionality isn't affected.

Michaelc, I have the same spec machine as you and experiencing exactly the same behaviour. I havent upgraded to 10.11.4 and still running 10.11.3, however getting exactly the same results as you. I have logged a ticket with Apple Support on their twitter account. I did an SMC reset, went into safe mode. I event reset the NVRAM. Still the same results.

They have asked me to now call their local AppleCare Advisor for further diagnosis.

I believe Apple is missing the boat here. There is clearly a bug in their operating system and no one is attending to it.

After more research and testing, the IT guy at the company I work for finally told me to take the Macbook to the Apple Store Genius Bar. They plugged in and started up from their network boot drive. The lady initially put the system to sleep, closed the lid and opened it back up after 60 seconds or so. The trackpad still worked, and I was initially worried. But she closed the lid again and left it for 5-7 minutes. The next guy came over and woke up the laptop. This time the trackpad stopped working. They guy immediately said it was a hardware issue and it would need replacing. It should take 3-5 days. Will report back next week.

Same with me, new MBP bought 2 weeks ago, newest Capitan version. Absolutely annoying freezing of trackpad and disappearing of cursor nearly after every sleep mode. I did reset NVRAM, this did not help. Might have occured after I used second monitor for the first time, but i am not sure.

Five days later and Apple returned my MacBook. They replaced the logicboard, bottom clamshell casing and monitor (which was odd, since it worked fine when I turned it in). Everything seems all back to normal. Under warranty and AppleCare, it cost $0.

Exact same problem here also! No solution yet! I'm using a 2,8 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac Mini (Late 2014, El Captain 10.11.4) + BT apple keyboard + BT apple trackpad and it's freezing everytime it's been in sleep mode "for a long time". I've decided to not put into sleep mode anymore and just turn off my monitor, despite i guess i'll use more energy than just putting into sleep mode. Anyway, that's the solution i came up to after having to hard reset so many times.

Same problem here, doesn't happen always i have noticed it seems to occur when woken up from sleep and I have safari open and attempt to type into a field, may not be related but just something I noticed a hard reset fixes it.

Same problem. Updated to El Capitan because the App Store app forced me too and now the MacBook does not respond to keyboard and trackpad after a long sleep. It is a shame, I never had issues with my Windows computers.

Apple cannot even test their own hardware! You probably have like 7 models to test a new OS against and you cannot even do that? And you say Apple just works!!!

The only reasons I use this pice of crap is because I have to write apps for the app store. Steve Jobs would be turning in his grave seeing Apple go down the toilet!

This happened to me after installing Yosemite 10.10.5  I am not using with external anything (but I do have an external trackpad and keyboard in another room that I used about 6 months ago.  I turned bluetooth off, and immediately got click-ability back.  So difficult to do anything without it, and even multiple hard starts wouldn't fix it.

Same problem, I have a MBP Retina 13" from mid 2014. Trackpad has been frozen for a long time since upgrade to El Capitan. I have contacted Apple Help, unable to do anything, say it must be hardware, but I feel it has to be software related; After a few months I installed a Logitec Bluetooth mouse, and, although the mouse worked of course, the trackpad immediately sprung back into life and worked perfectly for about one day - then after a long sleep failed to respond again. This lack of response continued until yesterday, 22 June, when I updated El Capitan to 10.11.6. Much to my surprise the trackpad started to work perfectly again, I thought 'they've fixed it', but no, today, after a sleep, it responds no more and I'm back to my mouse. My question is, how can it be hardware, when the trackpad is somehow restarted, it works perfectly, and I'm sure would continue to work if the laptop never slept or was turned off?
