How can I play a file created in GarageBand for Mac in GarageBand for iOS?

I created a GarageBand file on my iMac and shared it with the GarageBand app on my iPad. When I tried to open it on the iPad I got an error message saying "This song was created with GarageBand for Mac and cannot be opened. Please select a song created with GarageBand for iOS". Having just spent weeks working on the song on my Mac I don't want to have to rebuild it from scratch in my iPad. Is there any way in which I can access the file from the iPad? What if I save it on my Mac with a different file extension, would that make any difference?

Thanks.
