All I would like to do is close iCloud. But when I do it deletes contacts, calendar... from my computers. Why am I not able just to cease using iCloud and keep the data I have on my systems? It should be simple but Apple has made it extremely difficult and troublesome.

If you turn off contacts etc before signing out of iCloud, you get the option to keep or delete. See not so difficult after all 😉

Spoke to soon. I unchecked any boxes in iCloud, exited iCloud and the data i.e. Contacts, Calendar, Notes was gone. I just want to use my computer NOT iCloud.
