iCloud vs iMAC

I did what was written about getting out of the iCloud. I went to System Preferences, iCloud and unchecked any boxes like Calendar, Notes... I then exited iCloud. When I went to the iMAC all Calendar, Contacts, Notes... data was missing. How do I keep data on my iMAC and yet NOT use iCloud?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)
