automatic login disabled after update to El Capitan

After I updated my MacBook to El Capitan, automatic login is automatically disabled.

I tried to enable it again, but even after unlock the lock in the lower left corner with my password the dropdown menu stays grey and non-clickable.

I found somewhere else that a possible solution would be to create a new admin user, restart the computer and login as that user. I should be possible for that user to enable it. But this didn't work for me.

How can I enable automatic login again?

Thank you for your help.

I guess it has to do with the fact that I use my iCloud account as my OS X account password.

But it's still weird this wasn't a problem (for me) in Yosemite.

There is one more step not mentioned anywhere.

Go to System Preferences>Security & Privacy>General

Uncheck the box that says:

Require Password after [5] minutes after sleep or screen saver begins

Do you have file vault enabled?

I had the same problem so I did some testing:

1. Turn off file vault

2. Try to enable automatic login - success.

3. Turn on file vault

4. Try to enable automatic login - failed.

File vault is managed on system preferences --> Security & Privacy.

Wow! I had asked at Tekserve, where I bought the new macbook, and had taken it to a genius bar; and neither mentioned de-selecting the box after turning of file vault. In frustration I selected the 8 hours option. But NOW you've let me smile again. Many thanks!
