cannot connect to bluetooth device

I have an iPod Nano that is new. I also have a jawbone mini bluetooth speaker. I'm trying to pair them and while both devices say they are working and searching, they can't seem to find each other and they are only 6 inches apart. Can you connect a cable to play through the speakers or is there some trick to the pairing?
